Material Required For Making Your Wood Chipper

Here is few material required when you are going to make wood chipper.

    Hopper/Feed Chute:

It is the feeding pipe or tub through which you can add wood to shred. It can be made with a pipe or with a plastic tub.

    Chipper Blade System/Collar:

These are the series of iron blades used for cutting wood. This is the main part of the wood chipper.

This part you can make by yourself or you can buy readymade. When buying the wood chipper, always check the blade shapes as it determines the efficiency of a woodcutter.

    Collection Bin/Power Source Machine:

This is the machine you have to use to decrease manpower and labor. You can use a simple lawn mower or sander ( fix sander to a plastic cover).

In the case of a lawnmower, you don’t have to use the feed chute.

    Types Of Wood Chipper

Four types of chippers on basis of blades

Two Types Based On The Source Of Power Generation

    1. Electric wood trimmer ( Electric wood trimmers are light in weight and make less noise while chopping wood and also they are available in the market in varieties. Some electric woodchoppers are battery-driven ( cordless) and some need a continuous power supply ( with cord).

    2. Fuel-powered trimmer( In this type of trimmer, we will use gasoline or petrol as a source of fuel).

Selection Of Wood Chipper That Can Meet Your Needs

In the selection of a wood chipper, you have to determine three things.

    1. For which reason you are doing wood chopping (for house lawn cleaning/ Industrial agricultural lumber cutting/ wood for your fireplace).

    a) For house lawn, we can use a lawnmower as a feed chute and collection bin and we can add a large circular iron blade as a collar.

    b) For fireplace wood, we will use steel pipe as a hopper, parallel iron blades you can extract from a knife after welding, and a Sander for power supply.

    2. Economic condition (you want gasoline wood chipper/electric wood chipper).

    3. Blade selection(screw-shaped blade, disc-shaped blade, drum blades).

    Common Uses Of Wood Chipper

There are two common uses of wood shredder for house lawn cleaning and wood chopping for the fireplace.

The most common wood chipper contains an electric power supply through the cord or the battery.

I have selected a wood chipper for my fireplace that is a fan blade wood chipper. The reason behind its selection is its affordability and handy nature.

Step By Step Process How To Make A Wood Chipper

Here is step by step process how to make a wood chipper. Scroll down and enjoy this process.

    1. Making Precise Blade Shape

We will first take a sharp iron knife and break it into two pieces with the help of a welding machine. And when it has been divided into two pieces, we will make two blades with these pieces.

We will again use a welding machine to chop ends of iron pieces into a roman folk shape and we will synchronize this technique for the other blade too.
Now, these blades are ready to grind hard logs in seconds due to their sharpness.
Things You Should Be Careful Of While Making Blades
Blade shape plays a key role in wood cutting.

    a) If you have not sharpened edges properly then the blade may break while woodcutting. Also, we have to give blades point shapes at their ends.

    b) Be careful of the blades, they can cut your hands after sharpening.

    2. Preparing The Supporter

Now in the second step of making a handy wood stripper, we need a supporter with which we will attach the power supply rotator machine or Sander machine.

For this purpose, we will use a plastic bucket. We will use a plastic bucket to make sure easy cutting for the fixation of Sander and Blades.

You can also use other materials but they are usually unmanageable. I’m using a polyvinyl chloride bucket for preventing torsion and bending.

Now, we will make two holes in the bucket. One hole in the center and the other on the edge.
The edge hole will be used for the insertion of steel pipe as feed chute with the help of glue. And the center one will be used for attaching Sander.

    3. Fixation Of Feed Chute And Sander

I will use the iron circular sheet and attach it with glue( Loctite Epoxy Weld bonding glue) to the inner side of the plastic cover and also attach the two Roman folk-shaped blades with this sheet.

Now, on the upper side of the cover, I will attach Sander with nails. I have used a battery-driven Sander. Put the plastic cover on the PVC bucket. Now the whole product is ready.

Benefits Of Using This Type Of Wood Chipper

Portable: This wood chipper is portable and handy.

Affordable: The toolkit we have used is cheap and easily available.

Cordless: You can easily charge the battery of a Sander and there will be no issue with taking wires to distant places.
